What cold winter attire should I buy for college?

I am from South Florida and I will be attending college in a much colder environment (most likely Tenn or North Carolina) . Being that the temperature in South Florida is almost never below 55 degress, I only own one V-Neck Sweater and one Hooded Sweatshirt. What else should I have in my wardbrobe that is practical and fashionable? a mackintosh coat? a trechcoat? a half-zip fleece? leather jacket? a cardigan sweater?
