Can I still be a coach even if I never played the sport?

I love basketball and football and know almost everything you need to know (obviously theres still more to learn) but I was wondering can I major in like Physical Education Coaching at college and get a job as a basketball coach or football coach. not head coach but just any type (istant, defensive, offensive, wide receiver coach, etc. obviously working my way up) maybe as a high school or like D2 college coach?
