When baby learned to eat with utensils by himself or herself?

I've been wondering this myself! My son is 1 today and we are still feeding him jar food. He has taken to some of the graduate foods, but not all of them. He is also still drinking formula, but we are probably going to switch him to milk soon. He does not use utensils on his own yet either, but we haven't been willing enough to let him try to because we dread the mess!
