Can We Claim Our Friend Kids on our Taxes ?

We have spent the entire year feeding, buying shirts,pants,school supplies, and even packing their lunches every day. The family told us we are more than welcome to claim their dependency on our 2010 taxes is this ok or not ? They are "hard-up" and on disability and state support so we had no problem helping the kids
